Quoted in the International Business Times on the impact of China’s debt trap diplomacy in Africa - and how Beijing’s image is increasingly that of a colonizer of natural resources. Will China’s overreach undermine its geopolitical strategy in Africa?
Azerbaijani Media and South Caucasus Issues
My comments about the latest crisis in South Caucasus with Russian peacekeepers allowing illegal mining on liberated territories and blocking accredited observers, and disinformation being pumped into the international media about Azerbaijan’s alleged blocking of gas and roads. International Media
Quoted in this great explainer article in the Cybernews addressing the connections between the head of the Russian cybercriminal group Evil Corp Maksim Yakubets and the Russian intelligence services, and how he is roaming free in Russia boasting of a lavish lifestyle with indictments and sanctions against him in the US and around the world.
Quoted in Cybernews’ weekly round-up of leaks, hacks, and threats - which also ironically includes a quote from CitizenLab’s lead researcher on another issue.
TV and Podcast Appearances
My discussion with Bruce Shutan on the One World Initiative podcast - we talked about Russia’s and China’s efforts to displace the dollar with their own digital currencies and why the impact of that has been limited, the impact of the FTX crisis on the cryptocurrency market and the differences between digital currencies and crypto, the protests in Iran and the policies the international community should be pursuing to help the people of Iran and to strengthen the different voices there, the historical, political, and economic reasons for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, why the war was preventable, and what we can expect in Eastern Europe next... and more. Great conversation!
My appearance on The Sexy Politico podcast where we discuss business in the age of political polarization, the difference between globalization and globalism, the role of big tech in governance, the future of the surveillance state, and many other issues related to business and foreign policy.

The significance of the latest human rights NGO angle in the Qatar bribery saga in the EU Parliament (covered by Politico) is that shortly before the World Cup I co-authored a pamphlet,Wie Katar zum internationalen Machtfaktor wurde, published by Mena-Watch in Vienna outlining how Qatar had employed a strategy of using human rights NGOs to carry out its dirty political work, including against rival states, and that unlike direct political lobbying & funding of mosques & Islamic centers, this strategy was never closely scrutinized by anyone but yet constituted a huge part of Qatar’s geopolitical strategy.
